The Early Married Life of the Morels
Summary of chapter one (1) of Sons and Lovers.
The Early Married Life of the Morels.
The book Sons and Lovers begins with the descriptions of the village, which in my opinion also describe the social status of actors in the Book. The Morel has just moved into their first house. Mr. Morel is a Miner and his family consist of his two children and expecting wife. Mr. Morel is always the last to return home and can be seen as an alcoholic. Mr. Morel cannot provide for his family because of his drinking habits. Mrs. Morel is a house wife and loves to sew. Mrs. Morel relationship is dysfunctional and abusive. The couple are constantly arguing about Mr. Morel drinking habits and the cutting of their son’s hair.
We learn about Mrs. Morel friendship with John Field. Mrs. Morel later finds out that her husband is poor and cannot afford to pay their bills. Mrs. Morel believes her husband was rich or well off but when she realizes he was poor she began to isolate herself from him and turned to her children. Mrs. Morel also disliked her husband friend Jerry. Mr. Morel went out with Jerry and returned after he felt sick. On his arrival home he awakes his wife.
