Roger Mais was a Jamaican journalist,novelist,poet and playwrigt. He was born in August 11,1905 and died June 21,1955. He was born into a middle class family in Kingston, Jamaica. Brother Man was published 1954 which was significant sympathetic exploration of the emergent rastafarian movement. By 1951, Mais hhad won (10) ten first prizes in the West Indies literary competition. He also had integral role in the development of politics and cultural nationalism is evidenced in his being awarded the high honor of the Order of Jamaica in 1978.

Most critics approve that "Brother Man" was a great book but after the book was publish alot of people started writing to the press. He was the first Jamaican novel to portray a rastafarian protagonist in a positive terms. But in those days people feel rastas where view as a menace to public safety,formed cults. People also wrote they should be denied vote,they were in fact protential rapist and murders,they should be publicly flogged. Roger Mais done something 50 years before it happen.

Brother Man is the tragic strong of an honest rastafarian healer caught up in a web of intrigue and betrayal in Jamaica's tough west kingston slums.Rastafarianism is a religous-cultural movement that started 1930-2 in Jamaica.Rasta's believe in Halie Selassic.He was the last emperor of Ethiopia. Their approved food is called ital. Rasta are so comman most people don't have any problems with.
